Discover the fascinating stories, coastal scenery, and rich cultural heritage of Tauranga on this relaxed two-hour scenic history tour through one of New Zealand’s oldest and most important settlements.

Departing from the Tauranga Port Gates, the journey begins with a scenic drive past Mount Maunganui and a stop at the famous Mount Main Beach, known for its beautiful white sands, ocean views, and iconic volcanic landscape.

From there, we travel through the Port of Tauranga, New Zealand’s largest export port, where you’ll learn about the harbour’s importance to the region’s economy, shipping industry, and international trade connections.

Crossing the Tauranga Harbour Bridge into the city, the tour explores some of Tauranga’s most significant historic sites. At the Elms Mission Station, one of New Zealand’s oldest heritage buildings, we uncover the early missionary history of the region and the first interactions between Māori and European settlers.

We then visit Monmouth Redoubt and Robbins Park, where the dramatic events of the New Zealand Wars are brought to life. Hear the stories of the Battle of Gate Pā, one of the most significant battles fought during the colonial conflicts, along with the land confiscations that followed and ultimately shaped the modern city of Tauranga.

Continuing through Tauranga’s central city area, you’ll see the blend of historic landmarks and modern development that defines the city today before travelling through the peninsula suburb of Ōtūmoetai.

At Ōtūmoetai Reserve, we stop to take in sweeping harbour views while exploring Tauranga’s much older pre-European history, including Māori settlement, pā sites, trade networks, and the importance of Tauranga Moana to local iwi for centuries before European arrival.

Returning to the port, the Tauranga City Scenic & History Tour offers a thoughtful and engaging overview of the people, conflicts, culture, and landscapes that helped shape Tauranga into the vibrant coastal city it is today.
